Bollywood film Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, and directed by Zoya Akhtar, has been selected as the official entry from India for the 92nd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
The movie follows the journey of an aspiring rapper Murad Ahmed set in the Dharavi slums of Mumbai, fighting against the odds to follow his dreams. The movie was inspired by the lives of Indian street rappers Divine and Naezy.
The jury to select India’s entry for the Oscars was headed by Aparna Sen, and the decision to select Gully Boy was unanimous. Last year, Kamrupi Assamese language film Village Rockstars was selected as India’s official entry to the 91st Academy Awards, but didn’t make it to the nominations.
The Best International Feature Film award was earlier titled Best Foreign Language Film award. Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma was the winner at last year’s event.
The cast of Gully Boy also includes Siddhant Chaturvedi, Amruta Subhash, Vijay Varma and Vijay Raaz. It was written by Akhtar and Reema Kagtim and produced by Tiger Baby and Excel Entertainment. It was released on February 14 and turned out to be a huge success at the box office.
The 92nd Academy Awards is scheduled to be held on February 9, 2020 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, US.
